Dilemma #3: The Struggle over western lands
Directions: In your notebooks write down what dilemma Pres. Washington's Cabinet is currently facing in your own words.
Dilemma Description: American settlers are moving into the Northwest Territory where Native American Indians already live. A problem for the settlers is that Native Americans insist that the United States has no authority over them and will defend their territory from these American "invaders."
Another problem is that the British are supporting the Native Americans in this fight. Having agreed to remove their forts from the western parts of American land in the Treaty of Paris (1783), the British have not kept their promise. Not only do they still have forts in various parts of the western frontier, but they are encouraging Native American Indians to fight against any American settlement. This message became clear when Pres. Washington sent an army to restore order in the Northwest Territory, but instead faced a strong Native American force called the Miami tribe, which resulted in the death of 600 American soldiers.
Cabinet Decision Options
Directions: As a "cabinet" decide which option fits best by choosing one of the following letters. Then write down the option on a separate sheet of paper and explain why it is the best choice in 30 words or more.
